The Chesterfield Marathon took place on Sunday, and thousands of runners pounded the streets all over Chesterfield in aid of various charities. Dunston Lodge boarding kennels Chesterfield helped to manage the section that passed by us, and we would like to say a big thank you to everyone who helped out, it was definitely an experience.

The Marathon made its return to Chesterfield for the first time in 30 years, and it was also the first ever in the town to include a Full, Half and Team Race. The race attracted athletes from all over the UK, Europe and Australia, though both the male and female winners were local.

Over 1000 people took part in the 26 mile marathon, which was won by Gareth Lowe from Barlborough, and there was also the opportunity to take part in the half marathon, group relay event and fun run. A huge well done to all the runners and marshals, it was totally worth all the time and effort to support Kids ‘n’ Cancer, and the many other charities that will also benefit from the event.

Proton Therapy Treatment and Kids ‘n’ Cancer

We were really pleased to be supporting Kids ‘n’ Cancer, it is such a great charity and we are so proud to be helping the cause. The charity is designed to help children in the UK receive life saving Proton Therapy treatment for their cancers and tumours. Unfortunately some children diagnosed with cancer do not qualify in certain situations for funding by the NHS. So Kids ‘n’ Cancer and their Patrons assist families caught up in the sad situation of not meeting the criteria.

Sponsorship Money to Ashya King

The case of five-year-old Ashya King has been all over national news recently, bringing the work that Kids ‘n’ Cancer do into the forefront of many people’s minds. His parents took Ashya out of Southampton General Hospital without permission from his doctors, in a bid to take him abroad for the specialist Proton treatment he needed which wasn’t available on the NHS. The organisers of the Chesterfield Marathon have promised to donate all sponsorship money to the family of Ashya King.

So here’s to next year’s marathon – we sincerely hope that it will be even bigger and better next year, and of course, Chesterfield dog kennels plan to help in any way we can!
